Mobile Security for Multiple Users

Firewalls secure mobile network access and regulate encrypted administrative connections

Kirchheim near Munich, 27th January 2012. On the CeBIT 2012 GeNUA, an IT security specialist from Germany, is presenting innovative solutions for connecting mobile users to company and public authority networks: The new version 3.0 of the GeNUScreen firewall & VPN appliance ensures that smart devices can securely access company networks without the installation of additional client software. The GeNUScreen uses a key server to accelerate connection processing for several thousand mobile users. A further innovation from GeNUA is the GeNUGate 7.2 two-tier firewall, which comes equipped with a SSH relay and is able to analyze and filter encrypted administrative connections at network boundaries.

The GeNUScreen firewall & VPN appliance establishes encrypted and authenticated connections across public networks by combining the layer 2 tunneling protocol (L2TP) with the IPsec VPN technique. This means that with the native support of L2TP in smart devices using the Android, iOS and Mac OS X operating systems mobile users are able to connect to company networks without first installing additional software. Employees are therefore able to gain the advantages of "Bring your own device" – at a high security level. Mobile users accessing public authority networks usually have to authenticate themselves with a smartcard. To deal with the extra load this involves the GeNUScreen 3.0 can be provided with a key server extension that can handle several thousand mobile users. This takes over checking the keys and guarantees rapid logons. Seven GeNUScreen firewall & VPN appliance models are available, covering a wide performance range: prices start at approx.1,300 euro for the compact GeNUScreen 100C.

Secure Administrative Connections per SSH Relay

The GeNUGate 7.2 firewall is equipped with a new SSH relay that can break open and filter encrypted administrative connections. Whilst SSH tunnels are often used to administer computers in external networks via the Internet, security policies often prohibit unchecked forwarding of SSH through firewalls. The GeNUGate firewall now allows administrative connections to be configured according to this security requirement.

The GeNUGate uses two different firewall systems, an application level gateway and a packet filter. Each filter runs on its own hardware with both filters being carefully matched to produce an optimal solution. This two-tier system raises the GeNUGate above many other firewall solutions: the application level gateway analyzing data content and the packet filter checking formal criteria. The Federal German Office for Information Security (BSI) has certified the GeNUGate as meeting the Common Criteria at the demanding EAL 4+ level. In addition, it is the only firewall worldwide to have been classified as Highly Resistant. A range of performance requirements is met by the four GeNUGate models available, with prices starting at approx. 10,000 euro.
