SYN flooding
Denial-of-service attack which floods the system being targeted with incomplete queries for a TCP connection to be set up. The systems attacked wait for the rest of the connection setup routine, and keep the information concerned in memory until connection setup is no longer possible or the system crashes. Modern-day systems no longer keep all the data in memory, or wait only a short time for connection setup to be completed.
