Program which is installed on a workplace machine and is designed to protect this like a firewall. Because it’s being used on a work machine, however, one of the paramount principles of firewalls is being violated: a firewall should always be installed on a separate system with a minimal operating system. Good personal firewalls primarily offer appropriate protection when used on private machines linked up to the internet, provided they are properly configured; protection by a normal firewall would often be not commensurate here. In the corporate environment, personal firewalls, because they offer a lower level of protection and are more difficult to manage, are no substitute for a central, dedicated firewall.
